Huddersfield Art Gallery- 17th August

On the 17th August I decided to visit Huddersfield Art Gallery to get inspiration for my A Level work. When looking around one artists work caught my eye, Kate Sully, as her work revolved around a biological theme.

Kate Sully is a mixed media artist and lecturer based in Sheffield who’s work, from researching, has been angled towards fertility and infertility. Sully takes cutting edge images of cells from laboratories at the University of Sheffield which she then digitally prints onto a canvas. From this she works into them with a range of media including pins and stitches.

The pieces of work were all hung on blank walls throughout two small rooms. They were typically hung in threes, but the cells were in a range of colours and shapes. The white walls allowed the work to stand out and also emphasised the intricacy of the work.

This piece of work Is called ‘Regeneration’ and is part of a three part wall piece equally spaced apart. It has been constructed on a canvas by being digitally printed on and worked back into using pen, thread and elastic. The colours used show the different components in the cell suggesting how overcrowded and how detailed each cell in our body is. This piece of artwork reminds me of a burst cell as the thread membrane doesn’t fully cover the whole cell and some of the contents have spilt over the edge of the canvas. This could link to Sully’s initial topic of infertility as this could be an infertile cell that has broken.  The two other cells found on the wall piece were in different colours clearly suggesting that these are different types of cells. These could be fertile cells, or may be the process the cell went through to become infertile.

Sully’s artwork could link to my title, ‘Interpretations of the Human Form’ as being infertile could be a cause of change in emotions, as well as cells being the core of the human anatomy which i will be mainly focusing on.
